Teen and Tween Skincare: What do they really need?

Skincare has become increasingly popular among adolescents, but younger skin generally requires only a simple routine. Overly complex regimens may cause irritation and worsen existing concerns. Not only can they be quite expensive, they also can lead to affect the skin barrier and lead to more problems in the long run.

Most teens and tweens will benefit from starting three essential steps. These are good, lifelong practices that will benefit them in the long run.

  • Gentle cleanser (morning and evening)

  • Lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer (morning and evening)

  • Daily sunscreen every morning (SPF 30 or higher)

Many teens and tweens struggle with acne and breakouts. There are some basic principles to follow, and of course, a dermatologist a good resource for additional guidance and treatment options.

For mild acne:

  • Use a gentle cleanser, or consider starting an over the counter, low-strength benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid wash

  • Continue moisturizing daily, ensuring that the label says it is oil free, or non comedogenic

  • Avoid picking or squeezing lesions

  • Consider starting an over the counter topical retinoid product such as adapalene gel

  • Consistency of regimen is most important

In addition, there are other lifestyle habits that are beneficial for young adults to start at this age.

  • Always remember to remove makeup before bed

  • Shower soon after sports

  • Change pillowcases regularly ( at least weekly)

  • Avoid sharing cosmetics as this spreads bacteria, and remember to clean make up brushes regularly

  • Maintain adequate sleep routines and find outlets for stress

Early intervention can prevent long-term skin damage. Complicated, expensive, 10 step regimens are not necessary for our youth. Establishing good routines, that include gentle products and regular use of sunscreen will be most beneficial for lifelong habits.
